Phlebotomists are medical professionals who draw blood from patients for various lab tests and procedures. The objective of the JMVU Phlebotomist Diploma program is to prepare students for employment as phlebotomists (SOC Code 31-9097). The student will obtain the necessary knowledge and skills for entry-level employment in a hospital, out-patient center, diagnostic laboratory or clinical setting. The student will learn to draw blood samples from patients using a variety of intrusive procedures.
The Phlebotomy program requires students to complete 90 hours of instruction within the Basic Healthcare Worker course and 75 hours within the Phlebotomist course MEA 0520. The program prepares the student to take national certification exam. The program includes content on the delivery of healthcare systems, communication and interaction with healthcare workers, HIV/AIDS education, infection control & safety, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, patient identification, specimen requirements, blood collection and equipment, quality assurance, waived testing and collection of non-blood specimens. In addition, resume writing, professional conduct, interview techniques, and on-the-job skills will be addressed for career readiness. Upon completion of the program the student will receive a Diploma.
